Greek Island of Crete

       

By far it is the largest island of the country Greece. It is also the fifth largest island of the Mediterranean. Not only that it is famous for its beaches, but it has a name for itself, thanks to the presence of numerous tourist sites. Let us take a look.


Knosses:

Basically called the political and the ceremonial centre of the Minoan Civilization, it is the largest archeological of Bronze Age in Crete. Situated near the main city of Heraklion, it is the most comprehensive tourist destination. This most beautiful cultural heritage is indeed a treat for the ever hungry tourists. This architectural beauty consists of things which give a deep learning of the culture of the Minoan Civilization.

Sitia Archeological Museum:

This museum hosts the wonderful collection of the Minoan civilization. It consists of findings from Sitia, Zakros, Petra and Palekastro. It is famous for its most comprehensive collection of statues, vessels, jars and tablets. So a bit of history involved here is sure to thrill you!!

Gortyn:

It is another archeological centre in Crete. It is said that it was a Minoan town from 1600-1100 BC. The heart of the Roman Gortyn consists of the Praetorium, which was built in the 1st century AD. One can also notice the Temple of Apollo and the temple of the Egyptian deities. So a lot of monuments just in a single place is indeed wonderful. During excavations, several parts such as theater have been excavated. One can find the “Queen of Inscriptions”, which consists of inscriptions in stones which are still available even today.

 

Khrissi:

Lying exactly opposite to Ierapetra, this place can be easily reached by excursion boats. This place is known for its lovely beaches and Cedar beaches.

Mirabello Bay:

If you are planning for a long holiday stay, then you should not miss this one out. The town Ayios Nikolaos is now a very popular tourist resort. Located in eastern Crete this place is the most sought after one, thanks to its beaches. The Lake Voulismeni is linked with the harbor. So boat journey links all the beaches around the city.

Anogia:

This mountainous village is famous for its woven cloth and is one of the best destinations to buy clothes for yourself and for your family!
